Ann and Robert celebrate being shortlisted for a White Rose Award

Ann and Robert are delighted to announce that we’ve been shortlisted for a Welcome to Yorkshire White Rose Award in the B & B / Guest Accommodation of the Year category.

This is the second year running we’ve made it through to the finals. Having been pipped at the post at last year’s ceremony at Doncaster Racecourse we’re now training hard and looking for an away win at Elland Road in October!

Once again we’re competing with some lovely properties across Yorkshire. Some of these we already know as members of Yorkshire’s Finest Accommodation. We’d like to take this opportunity to wish all this year’s finalists good luck at Leeds.

BBC4 “The Bridge” and Throapham House

I’ve just finished watching BBC4 crime drama “The Bridge”, which is based on the Øresund Bridge connecting Denmark and Sweden. This and the earlier Great Belt Fixed Link were huge construction projects requiring an awful lot of concrete, all of which had to be mixed to exacting standards.

One of the reasons Ann and I moved to Throapham House in 1993 was to give me more room to continue my research and development work on a range of sensors for the accurate mixing of concrete in my position as Technical Director of Hydronix Ltd. These Hydro Probe sensors were used on both of these construction projects, having been supplied through the Danish distributor Skako.

Prototypes for the current range of sensors were developed at Throapham House and tested in our stable block. Some 50,000 of these have since been supplied around the world.

“The Bridge” series is available on BBC iPlayer. Here is the episodes guide.

White Rose Awards 2012 now open

Just received notice from W2Y that the White Rose Awards 2012 are now open.

It’s great to see this lovely photograph of our family at the 2011 finals has been included on the promotional page. We had a great time and would like to wish this year’s entrants the best of luck – we hope to see you in October.

People’s Passion at All Saints’ Church Aston

Robert has been invited to play ‘cello in The Easter Anthem – Love’s Young King at a performance of the People’s Passion at All Saints’ Church, Aston on Maundy Thursday (5 April, 7:00pm).

This is part of a weeklong event broadcast across Radio 4 and local radio involving choirs across the country.

Robert said…

“I’m delighted that choirmaster Paul Hudson has remembered me. It has been a while since I played ‘cello in a choral work so I’m really looking forward to joining the choir in this exciting project.”

See the BBC Radio 4 website for more information.

Ray Gelato at BIN@Sheffield2011

I was at University of Sheffield last night for the BIN@Sheffield2011 conference dinner. A brilliant evening at Firth Hall with some old friends and colleagues from Digital South Yorkshire and the IET. Excellent local food with some fabulous music provided by Ray Gelato. If you get chance to see Ray and his band perform then make certain to take along the dancing shoes!

Congratulations to Mark Sanderson and colleagues for the organisation.

A fun day out at Tropical Butterfly House

A fun day out at Tropical Butterfly House

A few days ago I went to the Butterfly House with my daughter and two grandsons and had a wonderful time. We just missed the birth of two goats by minutes. It is amazing how they manage to stand up within a few minutes of being born. Also a first for me – I held a snake and a stick insect!! I only plucked up courage because a young girl held them first and then I was asked if I wanted to hold them. I could hardly say no, “I daren’t” could I? – Ann
