Yorkshire has a proud history in horse racing and the oldest of classics, the St Leger Stakes, is now run at Doncaster in September each year. The race has its origins in the nearby villages of Laughton en le Morthen and Firbeck where British Army Officer Anthony St Leger bred and raced horses.
