The oldest of classics, the St Leger Stakes, which is run at Doncaster in September each year has its origins in the nearby villages of Laughton en le Morthen and Firbeck where Anthony St Leger bred and raced horses.

We’ve got some great parks and gardens for you to enjoy near Throapham House, from the formal gardens of Renishaw Hall to the wild moorlands of the Peak District National Park while Clumber Park has been a favourite family day out for local people over many years.

Sheffield boasts the world famous Crucible and Lyceum theatres where you can enjoy productions by leading companies while the Motorpoint Arena and Sheffield City Hall regularly stage concerts by top artists and orchestras. The Yorkshire Sculpture Park and Hepworth Wakefield are both just a short trip up the motorway from Throapham House.

Rock climbing in the Peak District

South Yorkshire today has world class athletic and swimming facilities with many international competitions taking place each year in the area.
Golfers wanting a challenge will find we have several excellent courses nearby with the old Ryder Cup course at Lindrick being only 10 minutes away.
The Peak District National Park offers some interesting natural challenges to rock climbers at Froggatt Edge and Stanage Edge.

Sheffield city centre  has a great selection of shops and restaurants

We’re a short trip from Sheffield city centre with its excellent range of shops, restaurants and buzzing cultural areas.
The historic cities of York and Lincoln are both about an hour away with Doncaster, Nottingham and Leeds closer still.
And don’t forget to explore the local market towns at Bawtry and Retford.

There are some easy walks around our local villages documented in this series of trail leaflets and doorstep walks. If you prefer more demanding walks then the Longshaw Estate (National Trust) in the Peak District National Park is about 21 miles from Throapham and is a good place to being exploring this wonderful countryside.
